Shaping positive environmental attitudes is a primary goal in modern character education, focusing on cultivating a constructive outlook toward nature from an early age. Beyond merely understanding environmental issues, this process aims to foster an emotional connection and a sense of ownership toward the Earth. When an individual is successful in shaping positive environmental attitudes, they will naturally be moved to protect and preserve the environment, not out of coercion, but from genuine awareness and concern. The right strategies are crucial to achieve this objective.
One effective strategy for shaping positive environmental attitudes is through direct experiential learning. Taking children and adolescents into natural settings, such as urban forests, beaches, or national parks, allows them to interact directly with ecosystems and experience the beauty and fragility of nature. Activities like tree planting, wildlife observation, or environmental clean-ups can leave a profound impression that sparks a desire to protect. For example, in July 2025, seventh-grade students from Rimba Raya Junior High School participated in a three-day “Green Camp” in a protected forest, where they learned about biodiversity and conservation practices directly from forest rangers, fostering a strong sense of care.
Furthermore, shaping positive environmental attitudes can also be done through powerful storytelling and narratives. Stories about environmental heroes, endangered animals, or the positive impact of simple actions can touch emotions and inspire. The integration of arts and culture is also highly effective; through songs, poems, or paintings with environmental themes, students can express their understanding and concern. Schools can also create supportive environments by establishing school gardens, clear waste segregation systems, or zero-waste canteens. On Earth Day, April 22, 2025, a junior high school in West Java held an environmental art festival, where all exhibited works were made from recycled materials. School authorities, with support from the education department and sometimes law enforcement officials like the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) who assist in educating about the dangers of damaging eco-friendly public facilities, ensure that shaping positive environmental attitudes becomes an integral part of the student learning experience. Through these various strategies, we hope to raise a generation that is not only intelligent but also possesses a heart that loves and protects the environment.
