The distinctive aroma and warm sensation produced by cigarettes with a clove mixture once made them very popular among the Indonesian community. In certain decades, this type of cigarette seemed to be an inseparable part of the lifestyle of most adult men across the country. The blend of tobacco and cloves is what gives it a unique flavor and is its main attraction.
According to historical records, cigarettes containing cloves began to be widely known in Indonesia in the early 20th century. A resident of Kudus named Nitisemito is considered an important figure in the commercialization of this product with his famous trademark. During its heyday, factories producing clove-scented cigarettes flourished in various regions, especially in Central and East Java, employing a large workforce and making a significant contribution to the local economy.
The popularity of clove-flavored cigarettes peaked in the 1970s to 1990s. At that time, various brands with creative and iconic advertisements dominated the market. Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) noted that in 1995, the consumption of this type of cigarette reached its highest point in history, with millions of sticks sold every day throughout Indonesia. This phenomenon shows how strong its influence was on the social and economic life of Indonesian society at that time.
However, along with the times and increasing health awareness, its popularity has gradually declined. Government regulations related to tobacco products, intensive anti-smoking campaigns, and the emergence of various alternative types of cigarettes have been factors influencing this changing trend. Nevertheless, until now, cigarettes with a clove characteristic still have loyal fans in various circles. In a joint raid conducted by the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) of Surabaya City on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, around Purabaya Terminal, officers confiscated a number of illegal products that did not meet health standards. This incident shows that although their popularity has decreased, their circulation is still a concern for the authorities.
Although no longer dominating the market as they once did, clove cigarettes remain a part of Indonesia’s history and culture. Their distinctive aroma can still be recognized in various corners of cities and villages, a reminder of their golden age as one of the most popular tobacco products in the country.
